The new Guillermo del Toro flick, Pacific Rim: dystopia. Even the new Superman flick, Man of Steel, could be… -

Fast Cruise
22 May 2013 | 7:21 amI did say there would be a bit of a Dior glut on the blog what with my late late posting of the spring-is-sprung couture collection, my messing around with S/S 13 RTW and now this; a trip to Monaco over the weekend to go over to see the cruise 2014 collection, the first time in three years Dior has ever put on an official resort show, demonstrating Raf Simon's intent in what is an increasingly important part of the business (Cathy Horyn got it in one when she suggested that cruise/resort collections be renamed as pay-the-rent collections). To be honest, despite the growing retail… -
Hermès Silk Road
20 May 2013 | 7:26 amI blame the heightened sense of emotions on airplanes, but when I watched Hearts and Crafts: The People that Make Hermès, directed by Frédéric Laffont and Isabelle Dupuy-Chavanat, on an Air France flight last year, I was positively moved to tears. Ok, that was perhaps a pathetic step too far, but it was such a great short film, imbued with the sort of integrity, honesty and passion that is sometimes lacking in so many areas of the industry. In the opening sequence of the film, the stillness of watching the iconic Hermès 90cm x 90cm silk scarf (or carré) floating along a workshop… -
BITE Me
19 May 2013 | 3:42 pmMy one and only jaunt to Monaco was a literal washout this weekend with an uncharacteristic torrential downpour on Saturday. That didn't dampen the spirits of what was an incredible Dior Cruise show by Raf Simons, which I will post about soon, but I did chortle at the fact that ironically London is beginning to enjoy better weather. Therefore, the brilliant popup shop Beach in the East, conceived by the all-seeing, all-knowing Yasmin Sewell and her team at Paper Mache Tiger, couldn't have been better timed. Ye might have little faith. You might ask aren't we tired of… -

17 May 2013 | 4:44 am"This is a new Versus. it's for you guys…" said Donatella repeatedly on the Google+ Hangout to celebrate the launch of #newversus and J.W. Anderson's collaboration with Versus, where I a) lost my Hangout virginity and b) got lost in fascination of New York's rabbit warren Google offices. The "you guys" she was referring to was a mix of us bloggers on the Hangout, the smartphone wielding-generation who want instant gratification whether it's through an Instagram like or being able to shop for collections online, and a cross-discipline crowd, not…

Cold weather may increase blood pressure
22 May 2013 | 4:22 am'Bad weather could raise your blood pressure and even kill you,' is the unnecessarily alarmist headline in the Daily Mail. It reports on a large, complex study that looked for any association between changes in weather and blood pressure rates. The research focused on patients at a blood pressure clinic in Glasgow and looked at two consecutive visits the patients made within a 12-month period. The researchers combined these findings with Met Office weather data from the time of these visits to assess whether changes in patients' blood pressure were related to changes in the weather. They… -
Could a mother's lack of iodine harm her child's IQ?
22 May 2013 | 3:13 am“Mothers’ diets may harm IQs of two babies in three,” warns The Independent. The newspaper reports on its front page that iodine deficiency is widespread among pregnant women. Iodine is recognised to play a role in the healthy development of the baby’s brain and nervous system while in the womb and the World Health Organization recommends that pregnant women eat iodine-rich foods. Severe lack of iodine is one of the leading causes of brain damage in the developing world. But a new study, reported in most of the media today, suggests that even mild-to-moderate iodine deficiency during… -
Claims vitamin B prevents Alzheimer's are unproven
21 May 2013 | 4:26 am'Should you be taking vitamin B to protect against Alzheimer's?,' asks the Daily Mail. Its question is prompted by new research into whether a daily dose of vitamin B could reduce the loss of brain tissue in people with mild cognitive impairment. Mild cognitive impairment is thought to be a risk factor for developing Alzheimer’s disease. The researchers were particularly interested in the effects of B vitamins on ‘grey matter’ – brain tissue. Grey matter consists of a complex mixture of nerve cells and is found in regions of the brain associated with higher cognitive functions, such… -
Sharing a bed with your baby ups risk of cot death
21 May 2013 | 2:59 am"Bed-sharing 'raises cot death risk fivefold'," BBC News reports. The news has featured in much of the media, with headlines based on a large analysis of previous studies into the risk of cot death, or sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), associated with bed-sharing. Bed-sharing is where babies sleep in the same bed as their parents. It has long been known that bed-sharing with a parent who smokes or has consumed drugs or alcohol increases the risk of SIDS. This new study aimed to see if bed-sharing still increased the risk of SIDS in the absence of these risk factors. The… -
Job stress may raise our 'bad cholesterol' levels
20 May 2013 | 4:07 am'A stressful job really can kill you – by raising your cholesterol,' reports the Mail Online website. This headline is based on Spanish research that looked at the relationship between job stress and lipid (fat) levels in the blood of more than 90,000 people. The research found that people who reported difficulties coping with their job had higher levels of what has been dubbed "bad cholesterol" (LDL cholesterol) and lower levels of "good cholesterol" (HDL cholesterol). High levels of LDL cholesterol can clog up the arteries, increasing an individual's risk of…

Speech: Press conference: Prime Minister at European Council
21 May 2013 | 4:00 pmThis summit has focused on two issues. Energy policies that support competitiveness rather than impede it. And tax systems that encourage growth but also ensure that everyone pays their fair share. Energy First, energy. We need secure, good value energy supplies so that our businesses can thrive in the global race and consumers can benefit from lower prices. Today we agreed that means completing the single market in energy so that we drive competition between suppliers and in turn force prices down. And it also means making the most of indigenous resources such as shale gas. Europe has 75% of… -

The strange case of Tory homophobia
22 May 2013 | 2:40 pmFormer Tory MP Jerry Hayes has written a highly entertaining piece for the Guardian about the Conservative Party's conflicted attitudes towards homosexuality. He notes that history is repeating and quotes some of the vile things said during the decriminalisation debates of the 1950s by three Tory parliamentarians; Lord Winterton, William Shepherd MP and Sir Cyril Osborne MP. Hayes makes this delicious observation: I suspect that nowadays Winterton, Shepherd and Osborne would be welcomed into Ukip, the sort of party one instinctively feels watches Roots backwards so that there is a happy… -

A glimpse into the future
11 May 2013 | 10:44 pmIt's quiet this morning. None of the usual arguing over shoes and hair bands. No asking for pancakes. No un-flushed toilets. Just silence, sweetened occasionally by late spring chirps. A clock ticking, car whirring, tummy rumbling. Waiting. The girls were all away this weekend. The youngest two at Brownie camp (oh the tears, that's a whole other story) and the eldest at a sleepover. I wonder. Have I somehow opened a door to my future? I've never really thought about what life will be like, when they leave. I lie. Of course I've thought about it. They are only young once… -
Making memories at the West Bay Club, Isle of Wight
9 May 2013 | 2:58 amThe Modern Family was kindly invited to check out the West Bay Club luxury self catering accommodation on the Isle of Wight. Not having been to the IOW in a few years, we were curious what kind of memories an active family with a 8, 9 and 11-year-old could create! It's always a bit stressful packing up a car with three kids. Did we have snacks? (we were leaving right after school, and the girls would be starving). Did we pack everything? I put my sun glasses in my bag, just in case. We decided no screens, even for the car journey. This was met with a moan. There wasn't much to see… -
Expat conversations at Tesco's Fresh & Easy
6 Apr 2013 | 10:02 amTesco's Fresh & Easy has been in the news lately, having failed to capture the US market. Some say the Tesco formula just didn't translate. I found myself there recently, in search of mint sauce. After passing through the produce section, and stocking up on Peeps from the Easter display, I finally found the British food aisle. Taking up a mere 6' by 5' section of shelving, it contained an all star list of British packaged foods. I immediately started checking out what they had, mentally comparing prices. Marmite was $5.49 (a bit much), Colmans mustard was $2.99… -

Dortmund Must Seize Their Champions League Chance; They May Not Get Another
22 May 2013 | 9:11 amIn the modern game, success is often bought just as much as it is earned. To challenge on all fronts, the common view is that you need massive financial backing. As unromantic a viewpoint as this is, in the past decade or so, it has been very much the case. But, every now and then, a team will buck the trend and triumph against the odds. On occasions, it has been Barcelona. But in the here and now, it’s Borussia Dortmund (BVB). Under the enigmatic Jurgen Klopp, they have implemented years of sensible but ambitious development, a clear philosophy and a focus on promoting young, talented… -
Fourth Place Is Not Enough For Arsenal
22 May 2013 | 8:09 amIn the 52nd minute at St. James’ Park, the inevitable happened. Arsenal scored. Not many would have banked on the rejuvenated Laurent Koscielny to break the deadlock in such a fine fashion, putting his team firmly in the driving seat after a well taken half-volley, but it was no surprise to see another Wenger team heading for the Champions League (with the qualification round in their path) for the umpteenth time in a row (16 to be exact). Once again, The Gunners had got one over their fierce rivals Tottenham Hotspur, who, in spite of Gareth Bale’s efforts, were powerless to buck… -

My Trip To Legoland
21 May 2013 | 12:34 pmBy Helena Hodson, age 9 Legoland Windsor is bigger and better than ever because of two new attractions – Splash Safari and Drench Towers in Duplo Valley. Last Sunday I went with my best friend Talia and our dads. Even though we arrived at 9.45am and stayed until it closed at 6pm, there was more than enough to do in one day. It was an amazing day out and we really enjoyed it. As soon as we got there, we hired some Q-bots. These are devices which you can use to reserve rides – the Q-bot does the queuing for you. It will beep when it’s your turn, meaning you can go on other rides and… -

Silent Art Auction A Great Success
23 Apr 2013 | 4:35 amDespite the awful weather, local people responded magnificently to the Silent Art Auction held over the Easter weekend at Rottingdean Whiteway Centre, where for a few days the main hall was transformed into an Aladdin’s Cave of artistry. About 150 canvases and prints found new owners, and the generous bids submitted amounted to a total of around £1,400, a wonderful contribution towards the costs of running the Centre. The management committee is grateful to all those who took part, and particularly to Jan and Paul Mnich, who facilitated the donation of the artwork. The next fundraising… -

The short boat trip to Sark is akin to travelling back in time. A world with no cars, no supermarkets and no sky-scrapers awaits you. Enjoy the peace, the quiet and the beauty of the smallest of the four main Channel Islands. Peace and Quiet Whether you decide to explore on foot, by bike or in a horse-drawn carriage,… -
Places to Visit: Sausmarez Manor
12 Apr 2013 | 2:52 amThere is plenty to visit at this time of year in Guernsey, but a stop at Sausmarez Manor is simply a must. From the 12th century until the present day, the whole place has evolved around one family, the Sausmarez. They still occupy it now, making it much more than a living museum. Take your time to explore the manor’s grounds, the gardens, the Sculpture Park and if you are lucky try to catch Peter de Sausmarez, the current owner whose sense of humour will no doubt keep you entertained… The… -

Victor Hugo and Guernsey
14 Mar 2013 | 10:39 amThe imposing statue of Victor Hugo in one of Guernsey’s most beautiful gardens says it all…the relationship between the author and the island is longlasting and rightly so. It started in 1855 when Victor Hugo found himself in the Channel Islands having been exiled from France. Guernsey’s beauty soothed his broken spirit and inspired him to write some of his most important work. Energetic Victor Hugo’s romantic and dramatic approach to life was very well suited to the island’s scenery. He spent a lot of his time on the cliff paths around the island,…
