    >> I have a penchant for the sort of 'My Seven Days of Style' features that Japanese/Korean magazines seem to love.  So me thinks most people know that the most of these features aren't a REAL reflection of that person's week.  Nylon Japan dispatched photographer Reina Senga to my house to document seven days of outfits within two hours.  Apparently within two hours, I had packed in a meal to St Johns Bread and Wine, a shopping  trip to Brick Lane, a gallery visit, a trip to the cinema as well as hanging out in my house.  Quite a feat no?  I surprise myself…

I don't need to reiterate the 'big' story that has come out of this A/W 10-11 season.  Supposedly, we're all simultaneously growing up into our 30s, we're all looking to minimise, pare down, clean up and go for head to toe simplicity.  This 'new minimalism' we're talking about seems to have been taken at complete face value which is quite hilarious to think that come September, all ruffles, prints, shapes and frou frou will be completely shed in one sweeping action to be replaced by this so-called 'new minimalism'.  As a firm believer in…

  • Blood pressure changes before stroke

    12 Mar 2010 | 3:41 am
“Swings in blood pressure ‘could better predict stroke than average high readings’” reported The Daily Telegraph. The paper reported that “variations in people’s blood pressure rather than the average level predicts stroke most powerfully”. The news story was based on a collection of studies published in The Lancet. The authors have  presented a compelling argument that fluctuations in blood pressure may help to predict the risk of vascular events such as stroke. As mentioned in an accompanying editorial published in the same journal, it is important to point out that the…
  • The Pill 'does not raise death risk'

    12 Mar 2010 | 3:21 am
“Women who use the Pill can expect to live longer,” according to The Times. The news is based on research looking at the long-term effects of taking the contraceptive pill. From 1968 to 2007 the study followed 46,000 women that had either used or never used oral contraceptives, comparing their mortality rates. The four decades of data showed that there was a small decrease in the mortality rates of women who had taken the Pill, as well as a small decrease in the overall risk of developing cancer. This study has shown that the Pill is not associated with long-term health risks and also…

“Having a massage is no better at beating stress than home relaxation techniques like breathing deeply and listening to soothing music,” reports The Daily Telegraph. It said that while all methods can ease anxiety, simple relaxation at home costs nothing and can be just as effect an expensive massage or thermotherapy (using a heat-based treatment) session. This news is based on a trial on the effectiveness of therapeutic massage in treating generalised anxiety disorder (GAD), compared to thermotherapy or relaxation room therapy. After 12 weeks, anxiety scores improved in all three…

A new drug “cuts heart attack and stroke risk without side effects”, according to the Daily Mail. The newspaper says that the eprotirome tablets could rapidly lower cholesterol in people that do not respond to conventional statin drugs. This is an important and well-conducted trial that gave participants either eprotirome or a placebo alongside their prescribed statin drugs. After 12 weeks of treatment with eprotirome, which is designed to mimic a thyroid hormone, there was a significant reduction in LDL cholesterol. Greater reductions were seen with increasing doses of eprotirome. While…

The newspaper reports that a “big-bang theory” has found a link between sexual activity and general health. The news is based on two US surveys that looked at more than 6,000 people aged 25 to 85. It found that a satisfactory sex life is positively associated with health in middle age and later life. It also noted that between the ages of 75 to 85, 39% of men were sexually active compared to just 17% of women. The study has also introduced the idea of a new health measure,…

Recent newspaper headlines claim vitamins are rendered “useless” in as little as a week after opening the containers they’re stored in. The same of course applies to many substances. Take salt and sugar, for example – left outside in humid conditions they harden and lose their taste. Pharmaceutical drugs aren’t immune from such conditions either - that’s why their labels state that they should be stored in cool, dry conditions (as do the labels on nutritional supplements I hasten to add… certainly good quality ones).

Astonishingly, the drug stayed on the market despite the findings of a report in 2007 - published by the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) - that demonstrated it was killing around 19 per cent of patients, and was causing non-fatal heart problems in a further 8 per cent.

One quote stood out: “The science…

Later today I am delivering the Compton Lecture at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), I will be talking about Afghanistan. The core of my argument is simple – only politics will end the War in Afghanistan. The immense effort of UK, ISAF and Afghan troops is vital, as is the development and capacity building work that now runs alongside it. But – as with the vast majority of conflicts - the key is a genuine political settlement. This involves three things. First, the reintegration into Afghan society of low-level insurgents prepared to lay down their arms and accept the writ of the…

We often hear a lot about unreliable statistics. But the problem isn’t exclusive to domestic issues. This Aid Watch blog from New York University's Development Research Institute muses on the pitfalls of applying various indicators to measure poverty . Since the days of Rowntree, measuring poverty has never been simple, and bilateral and multinational donors need to continually keep refining their measures. But that doesn’t make working towards targeted aims like the Millennium Development Goals any less worthwhile. And some figures are beyond dispute: the UK’s commitment to a…

The people of Iceland have had their say on the Icesave Agreement that their Parliament ratified in December. Their decision to reject it comes as no surprise, given recent polling. But for Iceland much rides on resolving the Icesave issue and settling the debt owed to UK and Dutch tax-payers. The Icelandic Government fully realises this. I very much welcome the statement they made on Saturday underlining their commitment to repayment of the full amount owed, and their desire to draw a line under the issue.  Doing so will allow them to focus on delivering economic recovery and pursuing…

There are two emergency motions but only a slot to debate one of them – so conference voted this morning on which to debate tomorrow. Digital Economy Bill motion…

In honour of my writing this from Lib Dem spring conference in Birmingham, today's (short) list is Pop Songs That Name Constituencies With Liberal Democrat MPs. It's also inspired by the first entry on the list, which – bizarrely – was being sung outside the conference hotel in the early hours last night. Despite our 63 MPs, few constituencies are likely to appear in song lyrics because they contain qualifiers (mainly compass points). So Brent East, Leeds North West, Bristol West, Cardiff Central and Oxford West and Abingdon are unlikely to feature. I've managed to come up with…

Well, if you're going to get Pete Waterman to write a song, of course it's going to be a poppy seeded cheesefest. Our Eurovision entry, chosen last night, is exactly that. It takes you right back to the days of Rick Astley, Jason Donovan when he had the floppy hair and, basically, in my case, my youth. I wanted to like the film/DVD Motherhood. I really did. All the elements were there -- a hassled mum with a seemingly slacker hubby, Uma Thurman AND Minnie Driver. And the main character is a mum blogger. A mum blogger! I should have loved it. Well, I didn't and neither did the three other mums who watched it with me. The overriding theme -- how much mums give up when they ditch work in order to stay home with the kids -- fell flat. It was a bit contrived and not very funny. Even Uma Thurman couldn't save this film. None of us could identify with the main character.  The best…
