If Scots vote yes, the country they leave will consist of England, Wales and Northern Ireland. England, currently with 84% of the UK population, would then have 92%, Wales 5% and Northern Ireland 3%. England's share of the seats in the Westminster parliament would rise in proportion; its dominance, already great, would become even greater, so that the…

  • With the help of OpenBrand, is in-house branding killing the big agencies?

    Vanessa Zainzinger

Every status has its symbol, says an advertising slogan. When starting a business, creating this symbol is part of the foundation. Yet, as essential a part of their identity as it is, most companies leave their branding in the hands of design agencies instead of keeping the process internal. Doesn’t sound ideal? A small team of entrepreneurs in Prague think it does not. In response they developed OpenBrand, a brand building platform they dream will soon become the industry standard. Think of OpenBrand as the Google docs of branding. It provides businesses with a private space for their…

  • Autism detected in brains of six-month-old infants

    27 Jan 2012 | 3:53 am
“Signs of autism can be detected in six-month-old babies by measuring brain activity,” the Daily Mail has reported. While the Mail was correct, the research has not yet proved to be a perfect diagnostic test. This and other related headlines are based on a study that assessed the brain activity of 104 infants aged 6-10 months as they watched an image of an adult’s face whose eyes moved from looking away from them, to directly at the infant, then away again. Researchers called these eye movements ‘dynamic eye-gaze shifts’. They then assessed whether differences in brain activity in…

According to the newspaper, staff who put in 11 or more hours a day at the office are twice as likely to suffer a severe bout of depression than those working just eight. This news is based on a study that examined the working habits of over 2,000 UK civil servants and how their working related to major depressive symptoms in the six years that followed. After accounting for other factors linked to depression, the researchers found that working 11 or more hours a week was associated with a 2.5 times…

Heart attack deaths have halved in less than a decade, according to a major study of over 800,000 patients in England. The research has been extensively reported, with news sources suggesting a range of possible reasons, such as better treatments and a reduction in numbers of people smoking. As the study itself points out, many developed countries have seen reductions in heart-related death over the last 40 years, but it is unclear whether the trend is due to better treatment following a heart attack or steps designed to prevent heart attacks in the first place. This new study found that in…

Second — subjects in the study received 600mg of aspirin daily. And that's a long LONG way from the 81mg low dose that's commonly recommended for heart benefits. Those extra 519mg per day would dramatically increase risk of stomach bleeding,…
  • Protect Against Shingles Without Being Vaccinated

    The Healthier Life
    27 Jan 2012 | 8:49 am
If you had chicken pox as a child, then you're at risk of developing a case of shingles. Long after the chicken pox is gone, the virus that caused it (varicella zoster virus, VZV) lies dormant in nerve roots. VZV may rest quietly there for all your days. But for people whose immune systems are compromised by stressful events or immunity-suppressing drugs, VZV may suddenly come roaring back as a case of shingles. The shingles vaccine (known as Zostavax) was approved by the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2006, and in the European Union (EU), in 2007. However, you know how it…

The next time you're in a crowded space — at the supermarket filled with holiday shoppers, at a football game, in a busy restaurant — take a look around and consider this: One in every four people you see has a disease called non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and most of them have no idea they have it because they have no symptoms. In fact, most of them have probably never even heard of it. What's MOST disturbing, is that you might be included in that one-in-four.

The demand for fish has become so intense that HALF of all commercial seafood is now raised on fish farms. And unfortunately, some of the "aquaculture" techniques used on those farms are as deplorable as anything you'd find in a factory farm on dry land. So before you buy your next fish, there are three things you must know...

Using a microwave every once in a while may be convenient. But if you are trying to cook healthy foods, there's no place for radiation, especially if you take into account the potential cumulative effect of ingesting traces of those dangerous materials week after week, month after month, year after year... eventually it all adds up.

  • PM Holocaust Memorial Day Message

    klee
    26 Jan 2012 | 8:00 pm
The Prime Minister has given a message on Holocaust memorial day. Mr Cameron said: “Last year I had the privilege of meeting an extraordinary, courageous woman. Trude Levi was just twenty when she was ripped from her family. She was forced on a journey that can only be described as hellish, through concentration camps, work camps and death marches.     She saw and suffered some unspeakably evil things, but she survived to tell her story and pass it on to the next generation.   It is so important that stories like Trude’s continue to be heard, and read, and spoken…
  • 'Bold' action needed for growth in Europe

    ghudson
    26 Jan 2012 | 5:03 am
In a speech to politicians, CEOs and economists, the Prime Minister today set out the need for bold action to drive economic growth. As global growth forecasts are revised down and world trade continues to contract, the Prime Minister set out his belief that Europe can recover its dynamism only if challenges are confronted with real political will. In a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, David Cameron said: “This is a time to show the leadership our people are demanding. Tinkering here and there and hoping we’ll drift to a solution simply won’t cut it any more.  This is a…

Asda said nearly half of the jobs it created last year had gone to young people, while 8,500 jobs went to people who had signed up through Job Centre Plus. The chain, which currently…

  • January Books 25) Skypoint, by Phil Ford

    28 Jan 2012 | 4:13 am
Another pretty decent Torchwood novel, with an intersection between exploitative aliens and exploitative crime lords in the property market in Cardiff Bay, set just after Gwen and Rhys return from honeymoon, with Owen still dead and walking. Some nice exploration of the dysfunction in the Owen/Toshiko relationship (Toshiko gets to be on the front cover this time) and lots of reference to their back-stories which will please the diehard fan. My one gripe is that the supposedly Latvian crimelord has a rather Adriatic name ("Besnik Lucca" - first name Albanian, second name Italian).
  • January Books 24) Judgement day, by Scott Gray

    28 Jan 2012 | 4:08 am
Sadly the very last of the SJA audiobooks, read by Anji "Rani" Malhotra, about the kidnapping and trial of Sarah Jane by an alien race with an unhealthy devotion to the truth. It's a decent tale, well read by Malhotra, which actually probes at Sarah's own motives and actions and the slightly ambiguous moral basis for them, a bit more deeply and more effectively than one might have expected from an audio book for younger listeners. I was going to do a full roundup of all the Sarah Jane audiobooks here, but I realise that I still have two to ...

I was on the road a lot last week, so only now blogging recent reading/listening; stand by for a few more posts this morning. I remember catching occasional episodes of the 1981-82 BBC sf radio series Earthsearch, in which the crew of a generation starship have been wiped out by the ship's megalomaniac computers, apart from four children who are brought up under the computers' control and then must gradually emancipate themselves. In the second series, two children of the next generation are added to the mix and they too must shake off the computers' influence as they all seek ...
  • The weekend debate: Should Stephen Hester accept his bonus?

    28 Jan 2012 | 3:25 am
Here's your starter for ten in our weekend slot where we throw up an idea or thought for debate... Since the £963, 000 shares bonus for RBS Chief Executive Stephen Hester has been revealed there have been opinions pouring out from across the political spectrum. When Ed Miliband accused David Cameron of a "failure of leadership" over it, Cameron promptly distanced himself from the process altogether, with George Osborne claiming it was due to rules put in place by Labour. Boris Johnson seems to be against it, as is our usually economically liberal Defence Minister Jeremy Browne. And Nick…
  • That photo of Ed Miliband standing up to Rupert Murdoch

    28 Jan 2012 | 3:24 am
This week has turned into rather an Ed Miliband themed week, what with his flexible views on the public sector pay freeze (he was against it before he was for it), his views on pension policy (where Ed Miliband manages to be both for and against the same policy at the same time) and his take on chocolate pricing. So to round it off, here's that photograph from the Labour leadership contest of Ed Miliband bravely standing up to Rupert Murdoch:

Kate on Thin Ice is absolutely shining in her new role at BritMums helping to connect bloggers with good causes. Her latest endeavour is to get 90 women to write 90 words about Breakthrough Breast Cancer. So, here goes... My first memory is my mother, kissing my forehead and tucking me in bed. She has always been there. Though I live 5,000 miles away we can pick up the phone and chat about our day. Mainly she does the chatting, while I stir the bolognaise, check the spelling homework and run the bath water. She doesn’t mind my multi-tasking, I don’t think. In fact I can feel her each…
  • On haggis and Burns Night

    Susanna
    22 Jan 2012 | 6:38 am
I love my Scottish husband. I would do anything for him. Give up my career, spend my days wiping dirty bottoms, make endless meals from morning 'till night. But I absolutely, resolutely refuse to eat haggis. Never will a forkful of that oatmeal/lamb innards mixture pass my lips. I don't care if it is a national dish. Or if my marriage depends on it. The thought of it makes my tummy turn. I know this is not fair. I know that many people relish haggis, enjoy it even. Especially on the 25th of January, Burns Night, the birth date of the beloved Scottish poet Robbie Burns.
  • What happened to Susanna's shattered iPhone 4? Hint: Och Aye, the noo

    Susanna
    15 Jan 2012 | 5:24 am
I know you are just DYING to know what has happened to my little shattered iPhone 4 on her O2 Recycle journey. Well, here's the scoop. My little girl has made it to the remarketing centre in Scotland. She was inspected there, and because of her slight blemishes (OK, her entire glass back was shattered), they offered me £157.50 (down from the web site estimate £210). I thought about it for about a second and agreed. Those Scots sure are fast. I already have the cheque! Here she is all package up. She was given a grade "C" (oh dear) because so much work had to be done on her.
  • So what exactly do you do with an old, shattered phone? Recycle of course!

    Susanna
    7 Jan 2012 | 9:34 am
Ever wonder what happens to old mobile phones? I didn't, until 02 called and asked if I had any to recycle. And then they said they could track the phone and see where it ended up. Africa? Eastern Europe? Or most likely somewhere in the UK. I like the idea of the phone being gussied up, and given a new life, and not in a box in our attic gathering dust. If you remember, I got the iPhone4 as soon as they came out. Unfortunately I shattered it just a week after getting it! I was too cheap to fix it, and used it for nearly 18 months, held together with cello tape! I was pretty proud of…
