  • Gartner: Q1 2012 Phone Sales Declined 2%, Dragged Down By Asia-Pacific. Samsung Leads All

    Ingrid Lunden
    16 May 2012 | 4:25 am
Sign of a maturing marketing flattening out, a lack of compelling devices, or a contraction in the economy? Gartner today released figures that note that worldwide sales of mobile phones were actually down by two percent this quarter, to reach a total of 419.1 million units — the first time the market has declined since the second quarter of 2009, the analysts say. Gartner’s explanation is a slowdown in demand from Asia-Pacific, because of a lack of compelling new devices getting launched in the period: users are simply holding out until something better comes along. Nevertheless,…

  • MRSA 'has spread by transferring patients'

    16 May 2012 | 5:45 am
New research has mapped the way that MRSA “superbug” bacteria spread, BBC News has reported. The results suggest that antibiotic-resistant bacteria may often spread from large, inner-city hospitals to smaller regional ones when patients are transferred. The way that superbugs spread has been researched as part of an intricate study conducted by Scottish researchers, who looked at samples taken across the UK over 53 years. The researchers used genetic techniques to scan patterns and mutations within the various samples and to build up a “family tree” showing how a particular strain…

These indicators included BMI, waist size and levels of fat and sugar in the blood, which are associated with the risk of conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. 10 May 2012 | 7:08 am
That's an extremely strict diet. And it's one most people can't stick to. Apart from the fact that it is very unhealthy because the daily recommended calorie intake, when following a healthy balanced diet, is 2000 calories for women and 2500 for men. That's why researchers are starting to turn to surgery. In two new studies, researchers tested three types of surgery that actually change the size and shape of the stomach. (You probably know it as gastric bypass surgery.) All three forms were successful in getting diabetes patients into remission.

The Independent reports that Liberal Democrat MPs are trying to change the new assessment process for the Personal Independence Payments which will replace Disability Living Allowance. They believe that they may lead to blind people being denied the help that they need. This is a measure introduced by the Welfare Reform Act. The MPs are concerned that the new assessment process focuses on mobility and does not sufficiently take into account the ways in which being blind or partially sighted can affect everyday life. People who have sight loss need the extra help to, for example, help with…

The fabulous Fish Is the Dish peeps sent me over a load of fresh Haddock via @ukSeafoodchef.  So what to make with it? The wet weather inspired me to create this really easy fish stew, with a Mediterranean influence. Here goes... I grabbed what I had, a tine of chopped tomatoes, carrots, celery, onion, pink garlic, a chili and a few cherry tomatoes... Chop, chop, chop. I love the smell of fresh celery on my hands. Diced carrots. They aren't perfect julienne squares, but they are beautiful in their mishapped sort of way, aren't they? Saute. Stir. Bung in the other ingredients. My…

There’s been quite a bit of backlash from the Brits this season in regards to their growing frustrations with the pundits on BBC’s Match Of The Day. • England’s Squad For Euro 2012: Our 23 Picks

    Phillip Badger
    15 May 2012 | 5:30 pm
So Roy Hodgson will be naming his preliminary squad for this summer’s Euro 2012 tournament tomorrow at 8am ET/1pm BST. Here’s a comprehensive list of all the likely players considered, as well as who I think should be in the final 23 man squad for Euro 2012 in Poland and Ukraine: Goalkeepers: Three keepers have to be named, and there’s no debate as to who will be between the posts against France on June 11 (barring injury). After Joe Hart, the rest are really a rather mediocre bunch, but I would take John Ruddy and Ben Foster, with Foster as second choice and Ruddy third choice.

With the appointment of the experienced Roy Hodgson as the newest manager of the Three Lions, there is hope that England can make a run at this year’s European Championship. After all the controversy and negative media attention that makes the English squad seem more like a sideshow rather than an actual football team, a great run through the European Championship would alleviate concerns over whether Hodgson can thrive under the most pressure he’ll ever endure. With Hodgson’s impending announcement of the squad tomorrow, many questions need to be addressed in defense, midfield and up…
  • Is This Arsenal’s New Away Shirt for 2012-13 From Nike? [PHOTO]

A new photo has been leaked on the Internet of what appears to be Arsenal’s new away shirt for the 2012-13 season. Whether it is or not, we’ll have to wait a few weeks or more to find out. But the purple and black hoops certainly make this shirt design quite different than anything that we typically see in the Premier League. It’s certainly more attractive than the Freddy Krueger design that has been floating around. Could this be Arsenal’s new away shirt? I think it’s more likely that this one will be the one instead of the Freddy Krueger-inspired one. What do you think? Share your…

Last year 22-25 April, this year 6-9 April & next year Good Friday is in March! It means booking patterns are all over the place due to bank holidays. So we usually wait until the end of the month, before drawing conclusions and sure enough since Easter this year we have seen a good…

The travel industry has always felt that it has had to shout louder than some industries to have their voice heard when it comes to UK government policy. This year has been no exception. I am sure you cannot have missed the clarion call from airlines, tour operators and other sectors of our industry to force the Coalition Government to reverse their decision to increase Air Passenger Duty (APD) by a double-inflation 8%. However, the calls have fallen on deaf ears as the Chancellor in his budget confirmed the increase from 1st April 2012 with a further inflationary increase in a year’s time.

I hope almost everyone interested in fashion or beauty in this world knows this charming and incredible woman. Even if you don’t know her name or anything about her you had to notice the famous posters, paintings of her sitting and smoking a cigarette wearing a LBD and pearl necklace and looking like an angel. All her famous and awarded movies influenced the fashion world – naming only few: Roman Holiday, Sabrina, Breakfast at Tiffany’s or My Fair Lady. Her name was connected with Hubert de Givenchy, wearing his clothing during Sabrina and in the world famous opening scene at…
  • Water Based Discharge Screen Printing

    15 May 2012 | 3:07 am
Discharge screen printing is a water based process that allows for printing onto dark coloured garments with light coloured inks, while maintaining an extremely “soft hand” finish offered by water based inks. Water based screen printing is limited in that it is not well suited for printing onto dark coloured garments. Discharge ink differs in that it is specialty ink that works by removing the dye from cotton fibers in a garment at a certain temperature, then replaces the dye with the desired ink, thus allowing for printing water based discharge ink onto dark garments.  Discharge screen…

When it comes to screen printing ink, there are two types: plastisol and water based. Plastisol is the industry standard and the default ink used by commercial printers. It uses a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) base, as opposed to water based ink, which is exactly what its name suggests, a water based ink with pigments suspended within it. The limitation associated with water based inks is that you cannot print onto dark coloured garments, but they are excellent for printing vibrant colours onto lighter coloured garments. Furthermore, the print result is affected by the colour of the garment. For…
  • Get “Naked”

Of course I am not telling or cheering you to walk naked in the streets but only to fall in love with a nude colour… Because this colour is so easy to use with everything you have in your closet – honestly, with everything! The best combination this and next season is with the pastels, you can’t go wrong with it! Not even mentioning the combinations that are always IN – with black, with white and with red. Nude colour lights you up, makes you look casual, elegant and shows that you totally identify with the strength of the colour. The most common use when it comes to…
  • Red is for Self Confidence

nother trend which I honestly think has never been out of the fashion is the red colour. This season perhaps more than ever because same like the white colour you can wear the whole red outfit. Well…if you do then maybe you should not wear the red shoes as well. Black, white or the best choice will be the nude pumps or wedges – anything what makes you feel comfortable but also not destroying the outfit! For someone it can be too much wearing only red, especially if it is not his or hers favourite colour. Usually people are used to wear only one red part of the outfit – t-shirt,…
