The next time you're in a crowded space — at the supermarket filled with holiday shoppers, at a football game, in a busy restaurant — take a look around and consider this: One in every four people you see has a disease called non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and most of them have no idea they have it because they have no symptoms. In fact, most of them have probably never even heard of it. What's MOST disturbing, is that you might be included in that one-in-four.

In what may be the first test of Twitter‘s new international censorship strategy, Brazil is suing the company over tweets that warn drivers of police roadblocks and speed traps. The suit, filed in a federal court in Goias by the attorney general’s office, is also going after users who compose the tweets. Brazil’s government is levying fines of $290,000 until Twitter changes course. The government charges that such tweets break the law and directly endanger “life, safety and property,” CNN reports. The roadblocks, the suit contends, may thwart purveyors of other…
  • Sprint Reports Strong iPhone Sales in Q4 2011

    Stan Schroeder

Sprint‘s Q4 2011 earnings report is out, and the results aren’t stellar, but strong iPhone sales are among the highlights. The company reported a $1.3 billion net loss on a $8.72 billion revenue, with much of the losses attributed to iPhone subsidizing costs. Sprint said its iPhone sales in the quarter were 1.8 million, 40% of which were to new customers. However, one has to keep in mind that if Sprint sold more iPhones, its loss would be even bigger. Overall, Sprint now has 55 million net subscribers — 1.6 million more than in Q3 2011; 33 million of those subscribers are…

  • Could New York be a better US base for European startups than the Valley?

    Mike Butcher
    7 Feb 2012 | 6:34 pm
For many technology startups today, Silicon Valley remains the quintessential place to look towards for inspiration, trends and – for some – a place to set up shop at some point in their startup’s life cycle. That remains true of some European entrepreneurs as well. But with the Valley “mindset” of fast-paced innovation and the global Internet explosion, some eco-systems are looking to vie to become at least as significant. For a long time New York was the poor relation to the Valley in this respect, but with tech startups back in vogue the city is building its…

“Spoon feeding makes babies fatter,” the BBC reported today. According to the broadcaster, babies weaned on pureed food tend to end up fatter than infants whose first tastes are finger foods. This high-profile news is sure to be of interest to parents. However, the research behind the coverage is not strong enough to support such claims. The study compared information gathered on the diet and BMI of 92 child weaned on finger foods (“baby-led” weaning) and 63 children weaned using spoon-feeding. In total, 10 spoon-fed children were above a healthy weight compared to nine in the…

An 83-year-old woman has been implanted with the world’s first “3D printer-created jaw”. Using cutting-edge laser manufacturing techniques, doctors and metal experts were able to build up layers of titanium to form a custom metal jawbone to exactly fit her face. The metal jawbone was then inserted into her lower jaw, replacing a large section of bone that was destroyed by a chronic infection. The technique of 3D printing has been used to build prototype products for some time, but in recent years scientists have begun experimenting with the medical possibilities offered by the process.

It found that about 7% of pregnancies in women with diabetes were affected by birth defects that were not caused by problems with the number or structure of the chromosomes. 30 Jan 2012 | 9:09 am
In the UK, advertising for prescription pharmaceutical drugs on television, in newspapers and mainstream popular magazines, is currently banned. In the US, however, it's a completely different kettle of fish. There, your favourite primetime television drama will often be interrupted by an ad for a powerful cholesterol-lowering statin drug or some new cancer treatment. There's no escaping these ads!
  • Vitamin B6 Reduces The Risk of Colorectal Cancer

    The Healthier Life
    27 Jan 2012 | 8:59 am
A recent study that linked aspirin with a reduced risk of colorectal cancer. First — the study only included patients with Lynch syndrome, a condition that sharply increases colorectal cancer risk. So while aspirin may have protected some Lynch syndrome patients from colorectal cancer, those results can't be extrapolated to the general population. Second — subjects in the study received 600mg of aspirin daily. And that's a long LONG way from the 81mg low dose that's commonly recommended for heart benefits. Those extra 519mg per day would dramatically increase risk of stomach bleeding,…
  • Protect Against Shingles Without Being Vaccinated

    The Healthier Life
    27 Jan 2012 | 8:49 am
If you had chicken pox as a child, then you're at risk of developing a case of shingles. Long after the chicken pox is gone, the virus that caused it (varicella zoster virus, VZV) lies dormant in nerve roots. VZV may rest quietly there for all your days. But for people whose immune systems are compromised by stressful events or immunity-suppressing drugs, VZV may suddenly come roaring back as a case of shingles. The shingles vaccine (known as Zostavax) was approved by the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2006, and in the European Union (EU), in 2007. However, you know how it…

The demand for fish has become so intense that HALF of all commercial seafood is now raised on fish farms. And unfortunately, some of the "aquaculture" techniques used on those farms are as deplorable as anything you'd find in a factory farm on dry land. So before you buy your next fish, there are three things you must know...

    30 Jan 2012 | 11:46 am
Prime Minister David Cameron joined other EU leaders for an Informal European Council session. The extra summit was called to discuss growth and competitiveness. Following the meeting, the Prime Minister spoke at a press conference: “My message to other leaders was clear. We’ve got to be bold and decisive. EU action should match the ambition that we are showing back at home. So it’s a step forward, I believe, that we agreed today to accelerate the legislation that will do the most to generate growth; to consider a clear plan at our March summit to cut red tape; to remove…
  • PM Holocaust Memorial Day Message

The Prime Minister has given a message on Holocaust memorial day. Mr Cameron said: “Last year I had the privilege of meeting an extraordinary, courageous woman. Trude Levi was just twenty when she was ripped from her family. She was forced on a journey that can only be described as hellish, through concentration camps, work camps and death marches.     She saw and suffered some unspeakably evil things, but she survived to tell her story and pass it on to the next generation.   It is so important that stories like Trude’s continue to be heard, and read, and spoken…
  • 'Bold' action needed for growth in Europe

    ghudson
    26 Jan 2012 | 5:03 am
In a speech to politicians, CEOs and economists, the Prime Minister today set out the need for bold action to drive economic growth. As global growth forecasts are revised down and world trade continues to contract, the Prime Minister set out his belief that Europe can recover its dynamism only if challenges are confronted with real political will. In a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, David Cameron said: “This is a time to show the leadership our people are demanding. Tinkering here and there and hoping we’ll drift to a solution simply won’t cut it any more.  This is a…

Supermarket chain Asda has announced plans to create 5,000 UK  jobs this year in a £500 million expansion. Asda plans to open 25 stores, refurbish 43 existing outlets and invest in three new depots in 2012. The chain said it will create up to 5,000 jobs on top of the 30,000 staff it took on last year when it opened about a dozen stores and absorbed 147 Netto sites and their staff following its acquisition. Asda said nearly half of the jobs it created last year had gone to young people, while 8,500 jobs went to people who had signed up through Job Centre Plus. The chain, which currently…

  • Opinion: Jenny Willott is wrong on the Welfare Reform Bill

    7 Feb 2012 | 1:03 pm
On Sunday Jenny Willott wrote an article on LDV explaining the reasons behing Lib Dem MPs voting to reject the Lords amendments to the Welfare Reform Bill. However, I'm afraid that, as someone who has been campaigning on this for several months, I am not satisfied with her explanation and think that there are several flaws in her justifications. For example, to put what Jenny said another way, 4 in 10 people affected by the time limit will lose ESA completely. That'll be 280,000 people with long term illness or disability that prevents them from working. Those who lose it ...
  • A Journey to Europe and Back - Part 0

    7 Feb 2012 | 1:03 pm
It was back in the summer of 2010 when I decided to announce our plans to Alex. I use the word announce as back then Alex had little say in what activities we would take part in. Being the laid-back fellow he was easily (foolishly?) influenced in decision making, and so when I suggested we went to Europe for a month he took 30 seconds to think about it. And think he did. I saw his eyes gaze into the near distance, there were a couple of things to consider. Money - always an issue, and the fact I'd just ...

I have an article with this title on Comment is Free today: Does this mean British chess has always been confined to a social elite? [Malcolm] Pein suggests not. Talking about the match held by radio between Great Britain and the Soviet Union in 1946, he says: "Yes, the British team were all Oxbridge types - probably because everyone else was too busy earning a living. But if you look at photographs of the audience, they don't look particularly middle class." My own experience as a member of the feared Market Harborough team of the 1980s bears this out. When ...

I have a board meeting Monday, remember? Huh? As I flipped on the coffee maker Saturday morning, hubby still in PJs, I stared blankly at the coffee grounds. Erm, no I don’t remember. It really didn’t matter. This was all code of course. He wanted me to occupy the girls for a couple hours while he locked himself in the office. So ... off we went to Cafe Nero. I let the girls put on whatever they wanted -- which manifested in a rainbow of pink leggings, green and yellow summer dresses and navy jumpers. I pulled on the first thing I could find -- Gap curvy jeans with some sort of splotch on…

She has always been there. Though I live 5,000 miles away we can pick up the phone and chat about our day. I love my Scottish husband. I would do anything for him. Give up my career, spend my days wiping dirty bottoms, make endless meals from morning 'till night. But I absolutely, resolutely refuse to eat haggis. Never will a forkful of that oatmeal/lamb innards mixture pass my lips. I don't care if it is a national dish. Or if my marriage depends on it. The thought of it makes my tummy turn. I know this is not fair. I know that many people relish haggis, enjoy it even. Especially on the 25th of January, Burns Night, the birth date of the beloved Scottish poet Robbie Burns.

I know you are just DYING to know what has happened to my little shattered iPhone 4 on her O2 Recycle journey. Well, here's the scoop. My little girl has made it to the remarketing centre in Scotland. She was inspected there, and because of her slight blemishes (OK, her entire glass back was shattered), they offered me £157.50 (down from the web site estimate £210). I thought about it for about a second and agreed. Those Scots sure are fast. I already have the cheque! Here she is all package up. She was given a grade "C" (oh dear) because so much work had to be done on her.

  • FOX’s Americanization of the English Premier League

    Aaron Gordon
    8 Feb 2012 | 6:30 am
Most fans of the Premier League in the United States want the game to grow, and broadcasting games on a major network is a tremendous step forward. Unfortunately, this means soccer is jeopardizing one of the major areas where it breaks from every American sport. In a country where almost every televised game is sandwiched by balding men shouting declarative presumptions of questionable logic, where animated robots jump around 30-foot television screens flexing metal-muscles, we have to ask ourselves, is this the path we want the EPL to follow? Soccer is a graceful and beautiful game to watch.

    1. The Fantasy Cup-  For the first time ever, my fantasy football team is on a cup run, beating some poor, helpless bloke to reach the Fantasy Cup eighth round. Just to put that in perspective, I still have to win nine more “matches” before my results are featured for all to view on the front page of the Fantasy Premier League website. Is the Cup distracting me? Yes, probably. I have plummeted down the EPL Talk standings over the last month in a half, focusing instead on designing a team to neutralize my Cup opponents’ best assets. All my eggs are firmly in one basket. Wish me luck. 2.

    Rory Marsden
    7 Feb 2012 | 6:44 pm
Monday evening’s match at Anfield between Liverpool and Tottenham was a low-key affair. However, it did feature one standout moment: the return of Luis Suarez from his lengthy suspension for racially insulting Manchester United’s Patrice Evra. Entering the fray with 25 minutes to go, Suarez did not conjure the winning goal, but flashes of inspiration reminded everyone of his importance to a Liverpool side who have now drawn eight times at home in the league. The relatively low key nature of Suarez’s return was the perfect opportunity for all involved to put the troublesome last few…

As a daily reader of EPL Talk and sometimes contributor, I generally pay close attention to the comments about articles. It is, after all, a form of entertainment all to itself. One of the things I really enjoy about the commentary is that it is usually of a caliber beyond what you find on many other blogs. Not too many raving lunatics and few posters who just seem mad at the whole world or suffering from keyboard diarrhea. Most of the regular posters make their points well and get out of the way. There is often a vein of humor in them that I particularly enjoy. I love that we have readers…
  • Removing John Terry’s England Captaincy Causing Leadership Tensions for Capello & The FA

    James Pennington
    6 Feb 2012 | 7:35 pm
Lightning, it appears, does strike twice. Two years to the day after Fabio Capello stripped John Terry of the England captaincy, the FA through its chairman, David Bernstein, made the same decision in far more controversial and emotive circumstances amid the allegations of racism currently surrounding Terry and his July court hearing. And so for the second time in two years, England face the prospect of a divided and distracted camp ahead of a major tournament, because of the alleged actions of one player. Looking at this case, one needs to separate the on-field implications of the FA’s…
